Middlewood Lock - Overview
The project was part of a much larger £600 million mixed development, which included the restoration of the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal, undertaken by Manchester City Council. British Waterways own the canal and contracted with Volker Stevin for the restoration work.
Working alongside contractors and other sub contractors on this massive construction and civil engineering project, Hargreaves Lock Gates were sub contracted to install 4 sets of Mitred Head and Tail gates which had been manufactured by British Waterways. As with everything else on this project the gates themselves were on a grand scale. The larger of the four sets of gates measured 8 metres high and weighed 8 tonnes, the smaller sets of gates were 2.5 metres. The installation, fitting and commissioning took Hargreaves Lock Gates 6 days to complete.
