When the Callis Mill workshops closed it was a major blow for the whole country. Nigel and Dick's skills are highly specialised and they stand out head and shoulders above everyone else I've worked with in the canal world. Bob Huntsman - Chair of the Driffield Navigation Trust.

Wansford Lock - Overview

The Driffield Navigation Trust has been restoring the canal for many years and Wansford Lock was the final lock to be restored. Hargreaves Lock Gates manufactured both head and tail mitred gates in Ekki for the lock. The gates themselves feature an unusual hand spike mechanism to operate the gate paddle. Prior to manufacture of the gates new quoins were required due to the chamber having moved over the years. These were cast at Hargreaves Foundry to fit in the restored chamber. After manufacturing the gates and transporting them to site, installation took 5 days.

This was one of the first commissions undertaken by Hargreaves' Nigel Lord and Dick Booth after the lock gate company was formed following the demise of Callis Mill. On selecting Hargreaves Lock Gates, Bob Huntsman Chair of the Driffield Navigation Trust said "When the Callis Mill workshops closed it was a major blow for the whole country. Nigel and Dick’s skills are highly specialised and they stand out head and shoulders above everyone else I’ve worked with in the canal world."
