Huddersfield Canal - Overview

This project was part of the Huddersfield Canal Waterfront Development, which is supported by a variety of national, local and European funding organisations, and unusually involved working on a brand new lock.

The new lock was required as this section of canal had previously been culverted under industrial units. The tunnel, or culvert, at 400 metres long was opened up after demolition of the overhead structures. However, the level needed to be raised to meet the existing tow path, hence a new chamber with associated lock gates and canal furniture.

Hargreaves Lock Gates were working for K Rouse, the civil engineering company responsible for the groundworks, who in turn were working to Clugstons the main contractor. We manufactured and installed head gates at 2 metres x 3 metres weighing 1.5 tonne, and 2 tail gates 6 metres x 1.8 metres weighing 2.5 tonnes each. All were manufactured in PEFC™ certified Oak.
